Flights

The most popular way of transport to Greece is, of course, the plane. The International Airport of Athens El. Venizelos serves most flights from abroad and from there tourists go by another plane or ferry to the islands. In tourist season, there are also charter flights from abroad directly to the islands or few airports in the mainland.

The largest and most popular airport of Greece is the International Airport of Athens El. Venizelos. However, there are many regional airports in the mainland and the Greek islands. Apart from domestic flights, there airports also serve charters directly from abroad.

The KTEL buses are green in color and connect Athens to many towns of the mainland. Itineraries are regular and tickets can be bought just before the trip, as KTEL buses do not have online booking system. It is the most popular way of transportation in mainland Greece.

The most popular transportation mean to go from Athens to the Greek islands is by ferry. It is the easiest way even if many flights are available to reach the islands. Although Piraeus is the central port of Athens, many ferries also depart from the ports of Rafina and Lavrion. The majority of ferries in Greece are modern and offer a convenient trip. As for international routes, there are ferries from Italy (Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice) to the western ports of Greece (Patras, Corfu, Igoumenitsa) and from Turkey to Greek islands of Dodecanese and Eastern Aegean.

The most popular train route in Greece is from Athens to Thessaloniki. The northern and central Greece is also well-served by the rail network.  However, trains in Greece are not that popular as suburban KTEL buses, although in most cases the train fare is cheaper than the bus ticket. Trains are not the best transportation way as the infrastructures are old and trains are slow.

Cars are the best and most secure way of transportation in Greece when you are in a specific location and want to get around. There are car rental agencies in the most popular places in Greece and the Greek islands. The main road networks in Greece are modern and in good state, but the regional roads need attention as they are usually narrow and winding.

Taxis are easy to find in Athens and everywhere in Greece. There are taxi ranks outside airports, train stations, ports and also outside the most popular spots in Athens and the Greek islands. To stop a taxi, just go on the side of the street and raise your hand. it is a good way of transportation for small distances and it is quiet cheap if you compare it to other european countries.
